There’s many traditions that are very different in Spain than in the US. A big difference comes on your birthday, when you are expected to treat your friends and/or family to something - a meal, a drink, cookies, whatever you feel is Like most meals I make, it was a mix of Spanish and American recipes. Here’s what we had:
Appetizers:
Spanish Ham
Cheese
Mini puff pastry filled with chorizo, tomato, and hamburger
Mini puff pastry filled with blue cheese
Surimi and egg salad on mini toast
Grilled Shrimp
First course:
Manila clams, “fisherman style”*
Second Course:
Roast, marinated pork loin (a big “risk”, since I’ve never seen this done here)
Homemade mashed potatoes… mmm!
Dessert:
Orange sponge cake
Tiramisu
I was pretty proud, since it was the first time I had ever cooked clams and tiramisu and both came out great.
* The clams were really easy to make. Here’s the recipe:
Split four cloves of garlic in half. Fry them up in olive oil. Once they’re golden colored, add a soup spoon worth of flour and quickly fry it. Add the clams and 1/2 cup of white wine (I used the moscato left over from making the tiramisu). Cook the clams until they open up and add chopped up parsley to your liking. I used Manila clams (I think - they’re just “normal” clams here). If you speak Spanish, this is the exact recipe.
Alright, I better get to bed. It’s been a long day, and I’m getting old!
